Debut, rise and consecration of Giuseppe Scarpato, among the finest Italian guitarists in activity
Born in Naples in 1973, Giuseppe Scarpato's musical journey began with drums, inspired by his father's passion for Elvis Presley and Ray Charles. This editorial assignment for Ful Magazine traces his evolution from drummer to one of Italy's most acclaimed guitarists, working alongside legends like Pino Daniele and Edoardo Bennato.
The photography captures an artist whose career spans 25 years with Bennato, leadership of the Hillside Power Trio, participation in the prestigious "Notte delle Chitarre," and teaching at the LIZARD Academy in Fiesole. The portraits explore the relationship between tradition and innovation in Italian rock music.
"There wasn't a specific moment. I started thinking that what I was doing might interest someone in the early '90s, when I was about 18 and began playing for the first time in front of an audience."
This portrait session required capturing not just a musician, but a living bridge between Naples' musical tradition and contemporary Italian rock. Scarpato represents the evolution of Italian guitar playing, influenced by the city's unique blend of traditional Neapolitan music, blues, and rock and roll.
The photography explores the intersection of artistic heritage and personal innovation. From his early days creating Tarantino film tribute shows with avant-garde video scenography to his current role as producer for Bennato, Scarpato embodies the creative spirit of Italian rock music.
"Working with Edoardo is a source of great satisfaction and pride... The dimension I continue to prefer is that of my trio: even though its interpreters have changed over time, the spirit has always remained the same."
The project also reflects on Naples' transformation from a city "full of venues, outdoor summer festivals, beer festivals and more" in the mid-'90s to contemporary challenges facing live music culture throughout Italy.
